Mott--Hubbard transition vs. Anderson localization of correlated, disordered electrons
The phase diagram of correlated, disordered electrons is calculated within
dynamical mean--field theory using the geometrically averaged (''typical'')
local density of states. Correlated metal, Mott insulator and Anderson
insulator phases, as well as coexistence and crossover regimes are identified.
The Mott and Anderson insulators are found to be continuously connected.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Case Histories Of Specialized Turbomachinery Problems
PaperPg. 33-50.Vibration problems in turbomachinery occur due to many factors. Some of the problems could have been prevented if more detailed design analyses were performed. Other times the problems occur due to design extrapolations which are pushing the state of the art. The case histories of excessive vibrations and failures that will be discussed in this presentation are examples of those where additional design analyses would not necessarily have predicted or anticipated the problem that occurred because the analytical models are not sufficient to take into account all the variables
Actors and factors - bridging social science findings and urban land use change modeling
Recent uneven land use dynamics in urban areas resulting from demographic change, economic pressure and the citiesâ mutual competition in a globalising world challenge both scientists and practitioners, among them social scientists, modellers and spatial planners. Processes of growth and decline specifically affect the urban environment, the requirements of the residents on social and natural resources. Social and environmental research is interested in a better understanding and ways of explaining the interactions between society and landscape in urban areas. And it is also needed for making life in cities attractive, secure and affordable within or despite of uneven dynamics.\ud
The position paper upon âActors and factors â bridging social science findings and urban land use change modelingâ presents approaches and ideas on how social science findings on the interaction of the social system (actors) and the land use (factors) are taken up and formalised using modelling and gaming techniques. It should be understood as a first sketch compiling major challenges and proposing exemplary solutions in the field of interest
Two-phonon 1- state in 112Sn observed in resonant photon scattering
Results of a photon scattering experiment on 112Sn using bremsstrahlung with
an endpoint energy of E_0 = 3.8 MeV are reported. A J = 1 state at E_x =
3434(1) keV has been excited. Its decay width into the ground state amounts to
Gamma_0 = 151(17) meV, making it a candidate for a [2+ x 3-]1- two-phonon
state. The results for 112Sn are compared with quasiparticle-phonon model
calculations as well as the systematics of the lowest-lying 1- states
established in other even-mass tin isotopes. Contrary to findings in the
heavier stable even-mass Sn isotopes, no 2+ states between 2 and 3.5 MeV

Acute Cytomegalovirus Colitis Presenting during Primary HIV Infection: an Unusual Case of an Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrom
Severe ulcerous cytomegalovirus pancolitis developed during primary human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in a patient who underwent early combination antiretroviral treatment. This massive inflammatory process led to acute colon perforation. Serological testing demonstrated cytomegalovirus reactivation. Severe immunosuppression caused by primary HIV infection resulted in cytomegalovirus colitis, and initiation of early combination antiretroviral therapy triggered an immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome potentially leading to colonic perforatio
Oxygen-minimum zone sediments in the northeastern Arabian Sea Sea off Pakistan: a habitat for the bacterium Thioploca
Filamentous sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and geochemical parameters of sediments at the Makran accretionary wedge in the northeastern Arabian Sea off Pakistan were studied. The upper continental slope between 350 and 850 m water depth, which is in the center of the oxygen-minimum zone, is characterized by numerous sites of small-scale seeps of methane- and sulfide-charged porewater. White bacterial mats with diameters <1 m were discovered at the surface of these sites using a photo-TV sled. Seep sediments, as well as non-seep sediments, in the vicinity were characterized by the occurrence of the bacterium Thioploca in near-surface layers between 0 and 13 cm depth. Thioploca bundles were up to 20 mm in length and contained up to 20 filaments of varying diameters, between 3 and 75 ”m. Up to 169 ind. cm-2 were counted. Maximum numbers occurred in the top 9 cm of sediment, which contained very low concentrations of soluble sulfide (<0.2 ”M) and high amounts of elemental sulfur (up to 10 ”mol cm-3). Moderate sulfate reduction activity (between 20 and 190 nmol cm-3 d-1) was detected in the top 10 cm of these sediments, resulting in a gradual downcore decrease of sulfate concentrations. CO2 fixation rates had distinct maxima at the sediment surface and declined to background values below 5 cm depth. The nutritional implications of the distinct morphology of Thioploca and of the geochemical setting are discussed and compared to other sites containing Thioploca communities
Can filesharers be triggered by economic incentives? Results of an experiment
Illegal filesharing on the internet leads to considerable financial losses for artists and copyright owners as well as producers and sellers of music. Thus far, measures to contain this phenomenon have been rather restrictive. However, there are still a considerable number of illegal systems, and users are able to decide quite freely between legal and illegal downloads because the latter are still difficult to sanction. Recent economic approaches account for the improved bargaining position of users. They are based on the idea of revenue-splitting between professional sellers and peers. In order to test such an innovative business model, the study reported in this article carried out an experiment with 100 undergraduate students, forming five small peer-to-peer networks.The networks were confronted with different economic conditions.The results indicate that even experienced filesharers hold favourable attitudes towards revenue-splitting.They seem to be willing to adjust their behaviour to different economic conditions
Universality of Decoherence
We consider environment induced decoherence of quantum superpositions to
mixtures in the limit in which that process is much faster than any competing
one generated by the Hamiltonian of the isolated system. While
the golden rule then does not apply we can discard . By allowing
for simultaneous couplings to different reservoirs, we reveal decoherence as a
universal short-time phenomenon independent of the character of the system as
well as the bath and of the basis the superimposed states are taken from. We
discuss consequences for the classical behavior of the macroworld and quantum
measurement: For the decoherence of superpositions of macroscopically distinct
states the system Hamiltonian is always negligible.Comment: 4 revtex pages, no figure
